Hey! My name is Sofia, I’m the founder of Woop Woop School. I’ve loved comics since childhood. Stories in pictures fascinated me from the very first page — it felt like a portal opened between the panels into a whole world where anything is possible.
Many years have passed since then, and my love for comics has only grown. I’ve collected a library of books — from short-strip collections to large graphic novels in different languages, from Russian to Japanese. Eventually, my passion for comics led me to write a 540-page dissertation on the subject (oh boy! 😅) during my studies in Europe and the USA. And now I want to share everything I know and can do in this big comics course.
We will go through the entire process of creating a comic: from the first ideas, storyboarding, and scriptwriting — to final artwork, color, lettering, and a finished story. We will explore how to design characters, how composition works, what makes a comic alive and readable, and how this truly unique medium functions. And most importantly — how to tell your story using the language of comics.
This course is for you if you want to understand how the visual language of comics works and why it is unlike any other art form. What is possible only in comics? What do Einstein and icons have to do with it? What connects manga, arthouse graphic novels, and superheroes in spandex? You are in for a full immersion into the world of comics — and an exciting journey through the space of visual storytelling.

I divided the course into 4 modules that will allow us to cover all the most important aspects of creating comics:
- the basic elements of comic languageобсудим как работают панель, страница и разворот в комиксе, чем уникально сочетание текста и картинки и как в комиксах работает время, сходим на экскурсию в магазин комиксов и попробуем создать первые самостоятельные мини-истории в картинках.
- comics as documentationWe will learn how comics can be used to document real-life events, explore different approaches, try documenting our own lives in comic form, and also get introduced to manga and the secrets of character creation
- comics as adaptationWe will talk about how and why to adapt texts into comics (from novels to poetry), try creating our own comic adaptation, and also explore fascinating abstract comics and see how the short-form comic strip works
- final projectIn the final week of the course, we will work on your comic, go through all the stages together, and refine your texts and drawings into a finished story with a clear structure and content. In the last session, we will present your stories

THIS COURSE IS FOR YOU IF:
- You’ve long wanted to try making comics but didn’t know where to start — this course will give you a step-by-step system: from idea and script to final visual execution. Everything is explained in simple language and supported with examples
- You want to learn how to tell stories through images and understand how they work — this course will help you understand the language of comics: from panels to page spreads, how to control rhythm and time, and how to combine text and image
- You are interested in different formats and genres of comics, from short strips to graphic novels — in this course you will learn what connects these forms, what makes them different, how their expressive language works, and what possibilities each format offers (and how to use them)
- You are looking for a space for creativity and exchange of experience — the course creates an environment where you can work on your own project, share ideas, and receive support from like-minded people in a very kind and comfortable atmosphere
- You want to learn how to create characters and worlds that “work” in visual storytelling — we will explore the mechanics of character design, learn how to give them depth, backstory, motivation, and visual expressiveness
- You need a space and tools to develop your comic project — the final module of the course is dedicated to exactly that: you will work on your own project, receive feedback, and present a finished comic at the end

I am the founder and instructor at Woop Woop School. It is an illustration school in Belgrade for adults, where we explore many different forms of illustration, including comics. I have a strong background in art history and have loved images since childhood, so I can explain and show everything with humor and care. I have been teaching regularly since 2019, and this year I created the school where our workshop will take place. I look forward to seeing you in class!
I will provide a list of recommended materials before the start of the course, but there are actually no strict limitations — draw with whatever feels right for you! You can work by hand or digitally, whichever feels more comfortable.
Yes! It doesn’t matter whether you plan to make illustration or comics your profession, or just want to improve your skills in visual storytelling — this course will suit you. You will indeed be drawing a lot and there will be homework, but there will also be an atmosphere of support, creativity, and non-judgment. My courses are about inspiration and love, not grades.

This course will help you confidently step into the world of comics creation and turn drawing and storytelling into an engaging creative process. You will not only learn how to develop characters and stories, but also understand how the visual language of comics works — from page composition to the interaction between text and image. The course will give you the tools to create meaningful and expressive stories, whether fictional narratives or autobiographical sketches. It is suitable both for beginners and for those who want to structure their knowledge and bring their ideas to a complete project.
